About Me

I love hockey, especially the Calgary Flames
I love to read about Social Issues
I love to question and to learn

Who am I?

My name is Christal. I hold 2 years of Anthropology/Sociology studies from Concordia University and a diploma in Addictions and Community Service. I am currently taking an introductory Social Work class at the U of C. I am doing my social worker profile. My belief is that social change can happen through education. Oppression exists in the LGBTQ2+ community. By allowing all youth and the LGBTQ2+ community to express themselves through creative writing, barriers come down and social change happens. I would love to create a safe space for youth to express how they feel, this allows for communication, learning, growth and empowerment.

In SOWK201 we learned about values in the Social work Profession. I thought I would tie this in with who I am. Two specific values that spoke to me from the Canadian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics were the “Respect for Inherent dignity and Self Worth of Persons” and “Social Justice”.

If I were to work with the community of LGBTQ2 youth, I would strive to work alongside them and show them dignity and respect. This would include providing a safe place for emotional expression, and a focus on self-determination.

Working with the Anti-Oppression theory , I would recognize the oppression that exists in the LGBTQ2+ community and strive for social justice and equality.

“Change happens from the bottom up – all of us as individuals deciding that we will and we do have an impact”
